Identity Provider

An Identity Provider (IdP), also less commonly known as IAP (Identity Assertion Provider), is a key part of the SAML specification.

An IdP acts as the "middle-man" between SPs (Service Providers) and the database where user credentials are stored. It acts as a trusted provider which allows users to make use of Single Sign-on to access websites and applications using a browser.

Other benefits include centralisation of user management, so that multiple usernames and passwords are not required when accessing connected Service Providers.
